Richmond is home to nine recipients of the Medal of Honor, a legacy few cities in the nation can match. Most Americans have never heard their names. We're changing that.
Section 01 — The Recipients
From the Civil War to Vietnam, across the Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps: these are the Richmonders who earned the nation's highest award for valor.
Section 02 — Why We Exist
Three out of four Americans cannot say what the Medal of Honor means. We are out to make Richmond the city where everyone can.
These nine were as different as Americans can be, in race, in service, in era. What they shared was courage, sacrifice, and integrity. Their stories belong to every Richmonder, and they bring the city together.
We keep the legacy alive by putting it to work: scholarships and awards for students who live these values, named for the men who defined them.
Section 03 — The Monument
A few of the nine are remembered around the city: a bridge, a plaque, a scholarship. No single place honors them together. We are working toward a memorial in downtown Richmond that does. It is early days, and we are taking every step with the community, in the open.
